the 289 will bolt up to that tranny, but you will need to get the correct flywheel with proper weight. new frame towers to so you can bolt it down. personally i would stick with the 300-6 and rebuild it. there is alot of aftermarket for them and are a really torque engine. great for 4wheelin. I had a 302 in my bronco and it was a dog, and that 289 is gonna be setup for a car not a truck so you will need to change alot to make it move that brick on wheels hehe.

good luck

Be careful there are some early 260 and 289 motors that only have 5 bell housing bolts instead of six.

I love my 302, I step on it and it kicks like a race horse,
well, a 20 year old race horse anyway.

my 96 has the 5.0 and it'll put you back in the seat a bit if you get on the peddle.

I think the 5.8 would be better for pulling my camper, but that only happens 4-5 weekends a year and the "brick" is my daily driver so fuel economy (yeah sure!) is a concern.
I would have preferred the 5.8 but I bought it used so..... and it was/is absolutly RUST FREE. so the 5.0 it is.

I wouldnt recommend the 289, go smaller than the 302 and I think you may need to get out and kick the rear bumper at every light to get it moving and then jump back in.....

the 5.8 that I just swapped in to my bronco gets the same fuel economy as the 302 did. the motor doesnt have to work as hard to move around.

I am with RTM. watch out. if your 289 is a true early 64 then it will have a 5 bolt bell housing not 6. also the bolts for the bell housing are not 3/8" like the later 289 and 302. motor mounts are identical to 302 so get a set off a junk yard truck. put a torque rv cam in it, and glue the skinny peddle to the floor.

I personally would not go with a 289. Understand that the Mustang weighs a considerable amount less than the Bronco. You wont get to reap all the benefits from one of Gods best gifts, the strongest and most durable truck ever made. Id stay with the 302 ro move to a 351. Just my opinion.

its a car motor not a truck motor. you can have 2 of the same blocks but if one motor came out of a car its cam will be suited to high rpm power because the car is lighter and will be driven faster . the truck weights almost double so the cam must produce power at lower rpms. so a mustang cam produces power from 3000-6500 rpms. an f150 with same motor makes power from idle to 4500rpms. does that make sense. the 289 can make good power just be ready to spend some cash on parts that are suited for a truck and not a car ya know

The 5 bolt block has a completely different bell housing pattern. A 6 bolt bell housing will not bolt up to a 5 bolt block. So nothing bad just hard to get pieces for the 5 bolt set up and it would also create a problem for your tranny selection. There are no 4X4 5 bolt trannys out there that I am aware of.
