just bought a 96 f350 powerstroke. also have a 93 f250. on the 96 when i turn the key, it won't start after the wait to start light goes off when cold. my 93 has a relay i can hear clicking on and off when that light goes off, i can't hear anything on my 96 fuses are good. after i turn the key on and off about 15 times the 96 will start. that is after only trying to turn over about every 5 times.are the newer powerstrokes different then the older diesels. need some advice
greg
If that don't work check out your Batts. they could be about to kick the bucket. I have a 96 and had starting problems as well, and I am in florida. Any way the Batts. died when I repalced them low and behold the truck starts just fine.
Greg, if you will click on my profile and send me an eMail I will send you an MS Word document from a fellow member of another site that details the process for testing glow plugs and for the repair. If you need to do glow plugs it should be very helpful, it was when I did mine.
This site will not allow posting eMail addresses and if I use the link to send you an eMail from your profile I cannot send an attachment.
Please let me know what information you need and what site you saw this on, I have a bit of a library and have been sending it out to folks who need various bits from several sites.
Gbeach, I just put a new relay on my 1995 PSD because of hard starting and it took care of the problem. What I can't figure out is the old relay used to click off and on as you describe but this new one doesn't, You can watch the ampmeter and see that it just stays on for awhile even after the truck starts. Can't for the life of me understand how changing the relay caused it to operate differently....
fast freddie, i guess that's why i'm not sure whether to try relay first or glow plugs. did you have same problem and does your truck start after turning key just one time.
thanks
Check the relay out- put, key on and should have 12 plus volts. Also check each glow plug. If you have a test light, connect one end on positive of battery and unplug and test each GP. If the light turns on the GP is good, if it doesn't the GP is bad. 3 or 4 bad ones and you will have trouble starting. Good luck.
Gbeach, that took care of my problem. I did have to change the fuse that supplies power to the relay also. I guess when the relay went bad it blew the fuse. She cranks right up now. Relay was about $52 at the International dealer.
okay guys, i finally got away from the wife and kids long enough to do some troubleshooting. need some input so this doesn't look to easy. on the glow plug relay there are two big terminals one with 12v all the time and one with a double cable. there are also 2 small terminals which are activating the relay. on mine when you turn the key on one of the small ones has 12 v on it . after about 2 min the relay clicks and the 2nd small one has 12 volts on it. but the big terminal with the double cable never has anything on it. even put a clamp on amp meter. nothing. i am assuming this is power to the glow plugs. one wire for one valve cover and one for the other. does this not tell me it is the relay. just need some verification, i don't have the manual, but it seems straight forward. am i right that the double cable should have something on it.
thanks again. you guys have really helped me. wife is already wanting to sell it.
I just had to change the relay on my 97 PSD also due to not wanting to start, here in Canada it cost me $90 bucks. Regarding the question as to whether the glow plugs stay on or cycle on and off, mine always stayed on since brand new and still does the same with the new relay.
