Then get ready. I recieved mine in the mail today. Bad thing is, it looks like we don't have a choice. I'll quote:
"If you don not have this service done:
- your emissions warranty may be reduced
-your vehicle may not pass emissions or smog tests that may be required in your area.
-your State Department of Motor Vehicles may not renew your vehicle registration."

also RIP: "...the engine sound level at warm idle will increase slightly..." (what is "slightly")

If I wanted a loud Diesel, I would have bought a Dodge! I am also concerned about the MPG, not that mine is great, I just do not want less!

Question for all: Do Diesels have to pass emission tests in Calif.?

Hey emtabmm,
Do you still think the 04-flash will still include

pilot injection?

Thanks for ALL your help, past and present.

Again emtabmm, thank you for your invaluable info Now, in plain english-- when my truck is reflashed as this post reads will I still have the same truck I bought in Sept?? My concern here is if this reflash has any negligible side effects, i.e. poor fuel milage, decreased performance etc.
If the dealer has updated their system to the latest level(see other thread on latest info) YES, it will be ok.

My underlining is to suggest that Ford is NOT being very creditable regards this. My persecption is that they are trying to intimidate you into having the work done.

I got mine in the mail last night......damn, and this truck runs soooo good.....I love it......no probs at 9k......

I so do not want the flash.....but, I don't want to play the bluff game with the big boys....

I'm in So. Cal---Alta Loma......so, this damn thing is required...but can't I wait until '06???? the CA dmv link below states the biennial emissions test is exempt the first four years(see paragraph right before bottom of page--my car is new..).

http://www.dmv.ca.gov/vr/smogfaq.htm

good news though the '74 highboy is now free game!!! no smog test to bring me down!!!

kapnkaveman in California diesles are exempt from smog cheaks all togethere. This recall seems to have some othere motivation behind it. Mabe its those illdesigned injectors their trying to salvage. Ford needs to recall all bad injectors (c94s). Just beating my drum again folks

The first sentence says this:
"Smog inspections are required for all vehicles except diesel powered vehicles, motorcycles, or vehicles with a year model 30 years old or older. Vehicles registered in areas subject to the biennial smog certification program are required to submit evidence of a smog certification every other renewal period."

except diesel powered vehicles, except diesel powered vehicles,

Sooooo That was another of the many reasons I chose a Diesel.
I think I'll play the waiting game with Ford, and check here often. This Forum is a wealth of info. I've been following it before I ordered my truck, while it was being built, and still now while I'm lov'n it. Only minor issues. Console upholstery was pulling loose, the Dealer was great in seeing that it was taken care of. This is my first Diesel so I'm not sure what a rough idle is. What about "Dead Pedal", this thing's got so much power I wouldn't know it if you pointed it out to me. HAR! I'm tracking my mileage, have been since new. If I do get the re-flash, I'll tell em up front, I expect noooo less! or I'll be see'n ya. I bought the Ford cuz I believe they are the ones to have when it comes to towing. The clincher was how quiet it is over the Dodge. I'm very happy with my truck and want to stay that way.
