OK I've been reading about how bad the five speed transmission is in the F-150 pick-up.
So what is so bad with it? My 1994 F-150 4.9 5spd runs great! I pull a 1997 sunline solars 5001lb loaded or a flat bed with a 4500lb antique tractor on it. I pull in 5th gear if I'm going down hill or on the flat with little or no wind, keep it in 4th up hills and pulling into a head wind.
Mine seems to do just fine.I would really like to know the bad points of this trans.
Thanks
Mark H.
I have read what steell has mentioned and agree with him. I have also read that the mazda trans doen't have a strong OD so hauling or towing could cause failure again this is just info I have read. No first hand experience with the mazda trans.
I had a bad experience with mine in my '96. I have never had a problem with clutches untill I got my truck. I hauled with it the same as I had done with my previous truck (A GMC Sonoma with a four!!) and never burned the clutch in 80,000 miles of pulling a 2 ton trailer. I couldn't keep a clutch in my F-150, though, untill I got a heavy duty one from Mc Leod. However, shortly thereafter (about 3 months), I started dropping syncros and it would not stay in gear. Finally, pulling into my driveway one day, I heard a loud bang and a screeching sound... the input shaft had broken. I removed the M5OD and installed a C6, and for 168,000 miles, had no trouble. Now I'm back to Overdrive with an AOD, and another 40,000 miles, not a problem, either. I wanted to get a HD ZF 5 speed, but they are too expensive, even salvaged units! So I went with the cheaper automatic, but I realy miss the stick, I just love shifting for myself.
