4 x 4 trouble
I have a '93 F250, 7.3L diesel, supercab 4x4. Last night, while on a visit to my friends in the mountains, I was in the snow and had to put it into 4 high and 4 low. I let it sit over night in 4 high and this morning when I went to drive it into town it won't disengage the 4 x4, HELP! I have the shifter all the way forward (or as far as it seems to go towards the engine) which should be back to 2 wheel drive but it is still in 4 high. I have tried everything I can think of - shifted to 4 low with the transmission in neutral (automatic transmission) and then back again, I tried backing it the suggested 10 feet, etc., but the dash light is on and I can feel and hear that it is still in 4high. Any suggestions? When I took it in for an oil change the front and rear transfer cases were all okay. I need to drive home after the new year - an eight hour drive and I know to do that in 4 high would be costly and a bad idea. I was hoping and would appreciate it if someone could give me some ideas as to what is wrong although I will be taking it in to the local garage this week.
When you were moving the lever to 4 low did you drive to see if it was in 4 low or just move the shifter?
If you can get the truck to shift to 4 low and drive, then the linkage is still hooked up.
If it will not drive in low range then the linkage is unhooked or frozen solid
If you drove a good distance so everything was warm on the way into the mountains, then drove through snow when you got there, then shut the truck down, I would think you may have ice frozen around the linkage to the transfer case. If you can drive around on snowy roads for a while in 4 high to get the transmission/transfer cases warm you may be able to get it back in 2 high.
My 86 transfer case gets a little stuborn shifting when it is real cold. But it is smooth as silk when it is warm.
look and see if your linkage has any slop init ,if so the linkage bushings may need to be replaced , crawl under neath have someone move the shifter back and forth(dont shift ,just wiggle it )look at the linkage and see if all the connections,(the rods connected to the shifter and to the tranfercase) move the same, even a small amount of play can cause it not to shift out of 4wd, if they dont ,you can move the bar by hand , connected to tranfer case and that should take it out of 4wd, BLOCK THE WHEELS...or put parking brake on before getting underneath the truck, incase you shift the transfer case into neutral, this happened to me,just a little scacy when your truck starts rolling,my 4wd shifter also had to be taken apart and greased, no factory grease zerks on this piece.with new bushings and shifter greased it works like new, hope this helps
