Do I order the 941 or the 801?
Daily Driver with an 18 year old at the wheel. If I run it at higher revs, maybe at the track just for giggles a couple times and a "few red light race," is the 801 my choice?
Heh, I have a few threads floating around - assumed people would remember. ...My bad. : )
Most likely I'll be running the Edelbrock Performer RPM heads, Erson rollers, Crane Hydro lifters, and either the 941 or 801. I drive this truck to and from work/school everyday, (10 miles a day, give or take - 50 on the weekends), so I need to have drivability along with performance. I do, however, want to get everything out of the motor that I can.
The 801 has a huge crutch on the exhaust. Go here www.lazercams.com and look at some of their grinds. Keep the LCA around 108 or 110. I run the 801 and the edel heads. I think it runs great but has more potential. Lunati makes some good single pattern cams or at least close to single pattern. I wouldn't want more than 5 extra degrees on the exhaust. The 801 has 12 extra degrees. Crane does make a single pattern that has a low lift and higher duration than the 801 and is supposed to pull to a higher RPM. It is going to be a good long lasting cam but there are more aggressive cams to choose from.
This is difficult, as I don't have the cam specs, but maybe you guys can give me a ballpark "yes" or "no." My machinist noted my concern regarding what cam to choose and said he knew, "the perfect cam for me." It is a Melling cam that they used in older Cobra Jet engines - it supposedly sounds good, will give me good bottom end, and pull up to 5500 or so. Is this what I want for a Crew on 'riods?
While the older style cams still make good power the new lobe profiles have them beat. The 801 is very close to the specs on the original CJ cam but it is more aggressive due to the higher lift. Melling makes great stock replacement and mild performance cams but they don't have the R&D going for them like the high performance companies.
Ok - 801 will be the lesser of two evils, then? ...Running Edelbrock heads. Will I run into a problem with too much on the exhaust? 801 cam, Edel. heads, Hooker headers, and dual 2.5's out the back. I need to decide before he orders the cam. : )
I just got off the phone with my machinist; he is just beginning to clean things up and dig in. ANyway, he seems to think I'll be happier with the Melling or 941, (Melling Specs: 112 lobe center, and 214, 224), and not the 801. The 801 is a bit too aggressive for what I want to do. What do you all think? As well, how about a 9.0-9.2:1 comp. ratio? Seems low to me, but he likes it.
The 801 has too much exhaust compared to the intake with the edel heads IMHO. I would run a single pattern with the edel heads. I run the 801 and it makes all kinds of power but I know there is more and I am going to find it. Do not be afraid to go 10:1 with the edel heads. If you were running iron I would say the machinist had made a dead on assessment.
