Hi Fellas', I have a 72 Ford 7000 with the 391 FT engine and manual steering. I would like to put power steering on this thing for the obvious reasons. It is a handful!
My question is, are any of the pump brackets from the FE engine compatible with the FT, due to the water pumps and such appearing to be different. Or does anyone out there have a useable pump and bracket they might need to dispose of?
Any and all help is appreciated!
Thanks,
Bob
you might look in the super duty section , a big truck junk yard would be another place to look. your steering gear for that is going to be spendy. there are other things you can do also such as switch to centered steering , check out your front end , make sure things like the king pins are not shot. make sure your alignment is good. to much caster will make a lot of difference in something that size , make surer the tire pressure is right . switch to radial tires . if you have air brakes , a good way to go might be air steering. can you tell i used to drive a truck all day and work on it all night ,good luck bob
the other way to go would be to put a steering asist ram on it (my father did this to his72 1/2 ton 4x4, and a 68 peterbilt so it should work fine) the ram bolts to the frame and uses u bolts to atach to the centerlink, the only thing is do a little research check your steering travel and ensure you get a long enough steering ram, then you should be able to power it with about any model of pump and for something that size i would deffinatly recomend a cooler.
FritoLay, I follow you to a point, but doesn't there have to be some sort of valving to make that work?? I have in my posession a Bendix "big truck" steering gearbox for power steering. What I don't have is a pump to power it, or any knowledge of where the pumps are supposed to mount. I have seen a pump and bracket for the FE but I THINK it mounts on two of the water pump bolts. The problem I believe I have, is that the FT doesn't have those same two bolts, just one.
I was hopeful that perhaps some of those folks who were looking at those F600 dashes might have an opportunity to take a pic of the proper configuration or perhaps even find a phone no. for a scrapyard that might have what I need.
Thanks to you and Bob A for your input.

the setup my dad found (where i dont know he worked for a car crushing outfit for about four years so it could have been anywhere) had a valve on the cylinder that as soon as the ram started to move opened the proper valve and assisted pushing that direction. dont ask me the tech stuff i just saw it a cuple times. we later found a new valve body for his original p.s. gearbox. as far as the peterbilt it belonged to the crushing company and i never actually saw it just heard about it
