1.7 Rockers

Will there be any practical benefits, to mount 1.7 rockers in a stock 5.8 1996 motor?

no they will wear harder on your valve train
no extra benifits.
just get a fuel injection happy cam and it will make up for that and more.

I disagree completely. The high lift rockers function approximately the same as putting in a mild RV cam. They increase torque throughout the stock RPM range without really adding any RPM on top end. Figure about 5-7 ft-lbs throughout the entire RPM range of your engine.

Since the 1.7s are full roller rockers, they will decrease side loading on the valve stems and guides. The higher lift will work the valve springs a bit harder but nothing to worry about/

1.7 rockers

I had installed a set of these on my 5.0 with a stock roller cam. They will increase the valve lift of a stock cam about 0.030". I'm sure they were worth a few HP and ftlbs torque, but you will need a dyno run to see it. My seat-o-pants meter felt no change in power.
I later went with a crane compucam and 1.6 ford racing rockers, and felt a good increase in thrust with the seat-o-pants meter.

I would agree with StrangeRanger, they will add a little bit of torque power, and the wear should actually be less, as long as they are full roller rockers.

the wear would be from the ratio since it has a different piviting point than stock

But the roller tips eliminate virtually all of the side load on the valve stems that you get from a normal rocker; therefore there's less wear on the guides. The geometry from the rocker pivot point to valve is identical to stock, the difference is all on the pushrod end of the rocker. It is shorter, operates at a slghtly greater mechanical disadvantage and causes greater lift for the same cam input.

Thanks guys, quick answers! Obviously not much power/torque-gains for the cost and work.

5-7 ft-lbs. across the board is "not much" of a gain? That's not just a peak number, that's throughout the complete RPM range of the engine. Where else are you going to pick up that kind of performance gain with a relatively simple and inexpensive bolt-on?

It's not THAT easy to do, escpecially if you have a late model car/truck. I had to remove one of my valve covers to get out a tap I dropped into it (don't ask), and I had to remove the coil pack, upper intake, heater hoses, and all kinds of other crap just to get them off. took me about two hours to tear down and replace. It's not very hard, just time consuming.
