Oil pressure guage?

This probably has been asked before.................

On my brand new 150 xlt I have an "oil pressure" guage. I noticed that it only moves on start up. Otherwise it just sits there. Could this be an "idiot light" guage?

If it is, can this be turned into a real oil pressure guage.

Same thing applies to the alt.

PS. This is my first truck and I think it is great.

Thanks

Ford designs their guages to not move around a whole lot. This worries a lot of people (when I stop my oil pressure drops whats wrong?!!) So, idiot light guage is a good way of thinking about it, but it will change, it just doesn't respond to small changes. Its not really possible to modify it.

Not true, the Ford oil pressure guages either read no pressure, or read about half scale, they CANNOT show any fluctuations in pressure because the sending unit is a NORMALLY OPEN SWITCH that closes about 7PSI of oil pressure.

The sending unit "switch" can be replaced with an analog type of sending unit so fluctuations in oil pressure can be seen.

Thank you for the reply. I prefer to have "moving" guage. Gives me something to look at nothwithstanding to monitor performance.

Have a great Christmas.........

Since I posted a question and got back some good information, I have another question..........

What needs to be done to change the "idiot" guage to a real oil pressure guage?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Buy a real oil pressuer gauge and remote mount it.No mater what you do to that gauge it will not read actual oil pressure.

You can change out the sending unit "switch", and replace it with an analog type of sending unit. Some instrument panels have a series 20 ohm resistor with the gauge, but when I converted my 1999 Ranger, I did not have the resistor. If you have the resistor,
just short it out with a wire, or remove the resistor entirely, and replace it with a wire.
