Ok here's what I have. It's an 86 F-150 with the 300 I-6 with the good ole feedback carb. The engine has had a surging problem since I got it a few months back. I was told it was a carb problem so I replaced it with a remanned unit but the problem still comes back. The previous owner had the carb rebuilt many times so I'm thinking whoever worked on it thought it was a carb problem as well. What makes matters worse is it doesn't surge all the time. Sometimes it will do it right off the bat, sometimes after it's warmed up then sometimes it will quit. Could this problem be related to the ignition module and if so what's the best way to check it? Also, is it possible to swap to an older style carb and ignition system? Thank you for your help.
Yup you can pull the codes on some carbed motors, all you need is a jumper wire and a test light or voltmeter. Search for pulling codes on the eec-iv, ot this link may help you out.
Yes it is possible to swap in a older style carb and ignition system. Try searching for Duraspark II swap or something like that. It's a simple swap if you get the harness from a junkyard. You'll only have to splice like 1 or 2 wires, and you'll have a simple and reliable ignition system. I just ditched my eec-iv in my 85 f150 for the duraspark 2, and it made a HUGE difference. Just get a module, coil, distributor, carb and wiring harness from a 76-83 truck and you should be set.
The surge is while driving..sorry should have put that in there. I'm thinking of just scrapping the feedback and going with the older style. I hated the in between carb and fuel injection years.
