I have a ticking noise comming from my engine and i just cant figure out what it is??? I have re-adjusted the timing to factory specification but still it ticks, Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Also it has a very irratic idle, especially in the cold. the high idle will come on but sometimes it doesnt, and other times it will idle fine but then drop to about 400rpm and run really rough and almost stall.
if you tell us what year truck and what engine you have it will help us help you. right now im thinking somethign electronic as far as relays but im not sure if your truck poseses such things.
that might be the egr valve leaking or something i have heard them ticking before and it does sound like the valves. that might even cause the wierd idleing too
You may also have a broken piston skirt like I had in a 302 10years ago, sounds a lifter ticking that won't pump up ,only a little faster tick. A buddy of mine tore down his 302 to do a rebuild just because he had a lot of miles on mtr. He told me half of the piston skirts were in the oil pan, but the mtr still sounded fine.
Its a 1986 ford F150 300 six with a carb, hope this helps narrow it down. Could it be anything to do with the water pump as that has just started squeaking??
If its squeaking....The water pump bearing could be going bad, but unlikely as its a sealed bearing again, it all could be a cut belt thats frayed and hiting one of the brackets as its moving along - round an round...a belt would squeak too. Look at it closely, try to locate where in the area its coming from......
Look at see if hub where the belts ride is loose, if that is the case, that the water pump bearing is shot. if the fan moves and not the hub, i'd say it was the clutch
but my guess is your water pump is shot, but I doubt that is causing your problem.
Check to see if the ticking is coming from the carb. Once it warms up, one of the solenoids on the carb will make a clicking/ticking noise, that's normal. My 84, the solenoid was going bad, and it would click when it felt like it. I think it controls the mixture @ idle, so that could be causing the trouble.
the feedback system on the mid 80s 300s are the worst ever designed.
