2003 Cranking Question?
I have a 2003 Expedition 4x2 5.4L and sometimes upon cold cranks it makes like a loud metal-rubbing/knocking noise, just as it's turning over, for a split second, then it idles perfectly. It cranks right up, no hesitation, just that noise when it's cold. I've heard that the 5.4L are know for "piston slapping" during cold starts. Is that what I am experiencing? Any thoughts would be great. This isn't causing a problem because it cranks, runs, idles, and does everything perfectly, but I am just curious about that noise. Thanks for your help.

It could just be that the oil has drained back into the pan, and the parts are rubbing on each other. I would take it into the dealer and have them look at it since it is still under warrenty.
