Currently got 3.55s, I have a 1993 F150 302 5.0L 5spd. 4x4 supercab.
I tow a 24ft. travel trailer, I'm a little over my wieght rating for my tranny. If I havd 4.10s, it wouldn't be a problem, room to spare. my trucks pulls it great. took it on a 2k miles trip this summer, no problems other than a hose busting. But......long term, I want to keep this truck for a while. Just spent $900 on a new slave cyl. and heavy duty clutch. I know my tranny is the wink link. We will go on 5-8 trips this year with the trailer, probably a total of 1500miles. Got a quote from a diff specialist $1300 total. Shop has a great rep.
Waddya think? I currently tow at 60-65 in 4th, if I had 4.10s could I tow in 5th? I just don't want to raise my rpm too much in 4th if 5od doesn't work.
You won't want to tow in 5th gear anyways with a M5OD so I wouldn't bother with the 4.10s. Personally I wouldn't tow with a 302, I would consiter getting a 3/4 ton with a 351.
Do the 4.10's they'll make a noticable difference in towing abilities. I wouldn't use 5th gear when towing your camper though.
I tow a boat and a camper with a 302 and gears helped out alot and contrary to belief it tows just fine, it ain't a Powerstroke but it gets the job done.
3.73s only make about a 100 RPM difference from 3.55s, not worth the cost of conversion.
The weak point of the 302 is that, compared to the 300 or the 351, it needs to turn revs to make torque. Go for the 4.10s. You may want to scour the boneyards lookig for an F250 and get the ZF out of it. That would give you a much stronger box and a much lower 1st gear to get that camper moving. Plus with the ZF you have enough strength to tow in OD. I'm not sure what exactly is involved in the swap, I'd guess driveshaft surgery and some crossmember mods.
I had a 1/2T with 4:10 gears, 5 speed with a 302 and routinely pulled a 24 foot trailer. Normally I would also have 3 dirt motorcycles in the box also. Pulled about 1000-1200 miles per year on average. No problems and I thought it did a good job. I always used fourth as my top gear when pulling.
Biggest problem for me was the boarder line braking ability which I really did not notice until I went to a 3/4 T.
Mines a 94 302 until the 408 is ready. Towed my boat last week (5400 lbs) for 1st time with this truck. Was suprised how well it did though. I have 4.56 with 35's on it. Dont forget that it sucks down more fuel with those gears in there too!
Take it from someone who has a 302 with 4:10 gears.....love them.....won't every have another truck that doesn't have at least 3:73's......towed a flatbed cartrailer with a 1986 CJ7 at 55 mph up a 4 mile 6% grade......can't beat that.....
As for the 5th gear thing........wouldn't do it........especially in an M50D.......incase you are wondering.....I am a 2000 RPM's in overdrive at 62 mph with 31" tires.
