the company shop i work for we are having real problems with the pilot bearings on the F-450s we use. each truck truck pulls a backhoe . when the bearing goes there goes the cluth also! is there a better pilot bearing than the cheap one ford sells
No I don't know of any better ones, but here are a few thoughts on this subject.
I take it these are 5sps or 6sp zf's in these F450"s
I would chk the runout on your flywheels with a dial indicator
look for excessive play at the front input shaft bearing.
and excessive endplay within the trans its self
do these trucks have clunks when letting the clutch out in neutral?
If so, you have internal endplay that will cause the pilot bearings to go bad.
also i would be going after market clutches and pressure plate
Have the flywheels turned and resurfaced.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 04-Nov-02 AT 04:09 PM (EST)]If you look hard enough I bet your could find one of those ball-less oil impregnated copper bearings that would work. I used to have a Chevy S-10 that had those instead of the ball bearings. I changed the clutch twice over a period of 160,000 miles and that bearing still looked brand new when it finally went to the junk yard.
I posted it as a FYI for anyone who might want to know what the material is called. It is good stuff when used in the proper application. No correction to your post was intended.
do you guys recomend the luk? clutches or something like that. we try to use genuine ford parts but sometimes it isnt always best. these trucks usually gross 28 to 33 thousand pounds. thank god for the power stroke and a good 6 speed. something just for everyones info dont use an aftermarket fan clutch with big loads they go to pieces quick.ford oem works best. we found this out the hard way. 10 f450s and one f550 going strong daily
The online store here, alows Carolina clutch to advertise here,i believe they have LUK clutchs.yes alot of the diesel guys use them.
What did the shop do for your pilot bearing problems?
Are they watching for some of the suggestions I gave ? The zf's are a strong trans ,but have been having quality problems recently.they changed the size of the input shaft gear so they could get the 6sp ratio's .This has cause other problems with endplay, the gear is bigger on the input shaft causing it to stress the bearing and shims.
I spoke with zf directly after my trans in my 02 broke with 4800 miles on it.
What are the symptoms of a bad pilot bearing? My 99 V10 with the 5 speed has a "roughness" when accelerating that can be felt in the clutch pedal and floorboard between 2,000 and 3,000 rpm's. I still dont know if it is the infamous flutter or something in the clutch assembly. It is a definite vibration.
The Ford pilot brg's have come under serious scrutiny in the last few years with all the premature clutch failures. I do know some manufacturers such as Luk, are using high temp grease along with a few other differences. I do know that I have sold a boat load of Luk units without any pilot brg failures. I can also offer the brass bushing as well. Let me know if you need any help.
My F350 should be arriving soon.
Is there a way to check the input shaft end-play on the 6-speed transmission without dropping the tranny?
Are there *any* checks that I can do to see if my transmission is a problem?
Is there any way to be proactive with the clutch/transmission problems or does one just drive it until it fails?
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 08-Nov-02 AT 09:34 PM (EST)]Mncamper,
Mine only exhibited a clunk when letting the clutch out in neutral
The endplay you will feel it in the trans after shifting,it feels like
the shafts and gears are tying to catch up to the drive shaft.
mine also jumped out of 3rd gear about a 6 times.those were my symptoms
When they dropped the tranny the saw the pilot bearing was destroyed.
along with input shaft.
to answer your question no there isn't but in looking at the manual, taking the if the pto cover plate reveals the shafts ,I could only guess you could rig something to measure the endplay .
