years ago i had a bad wrist pin bushing and it sounds just as you describe. it sounded like valve train and rerally had me fooled. seems that when the cylender fired id get a loud knock. it would come and go as you describe.
Sounds like my problem...after 10 to 20 mins of driving, at Idle with DRIVE and/or PARK, I get that knocking. But not along with RPM. I've located the knock somewhere in the bottom end through oil pan.
Also the oil pressure gauge wigs out , after awhile of idle... the pressure will goto and stay at (L) but idle is still there.
I've read some threads about the oil pressure wigging out. But not my knocking noise.
i thought the same as you on the wrist pin. but as the bushing spins in the pin guide this would cause the knock to come and go. i drove mine to lake george towing a boat and had no problem but i was just lucky and would not suggest driving that far. but again it really had me fooled .
IIRC, the 302 and 351 use pressed in piston pins. That means the pin is pressed into the rod, and the piston rotates around the pin. There are no brass bushings involved on pressed in pins.
On a full floating pin (aftermarket rods) the rod has a brass bushing it it, the pin is held in place by clips on each end, and the pin is free to rotate.
