I was doing maintance on my 71 f100 4x4 today before the snow/rain begins. I couldn't get the grease gun nozzle onto the front axle's knuckle u joint zerks. Is there a special trick to it? :
if it is like most 4x4's i've worked on, and it is the axle u-joint they are sealed at the factory with no way greasing them. u-joints in front driveshaft, and ball joints can be greased ?
Some u-joints have a regular zert fitting and some have a small hole that requires a needle fitting on your grease gun. You can pick them up at your local parts store for a couple $$. Sometimes it is easer to use the needle fitting on the regular zerts. If they are sealed, dont worry about them unless the are loose or making noise. Hope this helps.
You can get a slim line adapter for your grease gun. Though, I have found that does not work on my driveline UJs and I have to drop the driveshaft to grease them properly.
Sometimes it is easier to replace it with a zerk that requires a needle gun. Basically, looks like a little dish shaped piece of metal with a valve in the middle.
