Well I don't think this other filter is my problem but you never know. I just have to find a parts store that list both filters since autozone only list the one.
It's not a filter per se. There's a screen in there to keep out some of the bigger gunk. My mechanic said to just take that screen out, because it is such a hassle to get to it. There is still the main fuel filter that would pick up the dirt before it got to the engine anyway.

Engineers design safegaurds in these systems on purpose. For reliability of my vehicle I would and have changed this componet, unless more $ you want to spend in the long run

Travel through it yes, to the fuel filter. By the time it reached the screen in the fuel bowl, it has already passed through the strainer in the tank and the in tank fuel pump as well. You won't hurt anything by not running this screen.
