Question how to verify an engine size via the id# on the factory label

I was given an engine that was supposed to be a 429cid, but one of my partners said because of the way the intake manifold didn't bolt onto the head he didn't think it was. The sticker on the side of the valve cover says 1972 429cid, however I now think that I should verify the engine somehow. My dellima is that I have got no clue as how to go about doing so. I need someone to point me in the right direction.

Hi and welcome to the site. If there are 7 valve cover bolts it's a 429 or a 460, the only difference is the stroke.

Casting numbers also.Block,Heads,Intake

If that is a 429 it will have casting number like this.

The 3rd digit of the prefix : C9VE- The V stands for Lincoln, this was the vehicle the 429 was designed for.It also spread over to the T-bird.

The T-Bird designation letter is S but it won't be a 429.
There is a special cast for later T-birds 1986
That prefix is E6SE

The Large Ford car got C9OE

The Fairlane size car got C9AE .

Trucks got characters like > D8TE

So, If that really is a 429 or 460 ,the 3rd digit will be a V.

It is best just to post ALL OF the casting numbers on a particular part.

IHTH
