What's up guys?
I need alittle help here..... My tuck is acting alittle funny again. It's been running great for months with the NEW Ford motorsport mass air conversion kit. But yesterday I took her out for a 15 min. drive and parked it for approx. 30 minutes and when I went to start her it just wouldn't ignite. I turned it over and over and finally she fired up. It idled fine then stalled. I did that five times in a row. It almost felt like someone was under my hood and pulled my ignition coil off while it was running . It would idle nice and smooth at 800 rpm's then just cut out. The engine didn't bog or chug. It was just like someone turned the key off.
I hope I'm making sense here. Any suggestions guys......ignition coil, ign module, computer, bad ground?
Any suggestions would be very appreciated.
I would suspect the ign. module first, they can fail under heat and resume operation after cooling down. The dist. mounted TFI is prone to that, so ante up for a good name brand unit, it'll be worth it in the long run!!
like the man said, ante up and replace the ignition module. I would also replace the coil, and the "donut" in the distributor. I am assuming the parts are all the same age, so do a little preventative maintenance ro you will be there again with a similiar problem. Cost on the parts is not that bad. One other note, you will have to pull the distributor to remove
the "donut" . Not a big deal but you will have to go through the timing procedure after reinstalling the distributor.
When I replace the ign module should I use Ford motorcraft parts being that I have a MSD distributor?
This sucks..........this dist is only approx. 1 year.
did it do that before the MAF upgrade ? If it is acting up, the MAF will cut it off. especially if there is no/ poor connection present.
I'm not sure on the ford one, but the Gm ones we work with kills it. Almost like pulling the fuel pump relay. it works on a heating element and the incoming cool air keeps it at a certain temp. which is converted to voltage then sent to the PCM/CPU to adjust fuel mixture. sounds funny that it acts up and not steady all the time. but then again, anything is possible ....... $.02
I finally got around to changing the TFI module. I couldn't get a hold of a Ford TFI so I went to the local auto parts store and bought a WELLS TFI module. (Part# F121)
Has anyone used products from this company before? This is a first for me.
Anyway, I think this did the trick!
So far so good.........
I have the same problem with my 91 F150. I replaced the TFI, but that didn't help. Wells TFI is OK (have used them on my E150 van). Stay away from their fuel pump and ECM relays, though. Went through 4 new ones and never got one that worked. Broke one open and it was rusted ( a brand new relay)!

Thanks for the tip!
So far the truck has been running pretty good. (Knock on wood!)
I still haven't had a chance to replace the Wells unit for a Ford one though.
