I just got my 99 Explorer with 75K miles (it was a repo, so I doubt there was much maintenance done to it).
I first started it up, and it would not idle while cold. Once warmed up, it was fine.
I went skiing, and the next morning (COLD), I had the same thing, very rough cold idle.
Then, I noticed a surge in the idle, all the time when it was warm. It will idle at about 600 RPM, and every 7 to 10 seconds, I will here a click (I think it's from the engine), and the RPM will go up to 900, for just one second, then back down, 7 to 10 seconds later the same thing. It does this in drive and park, and will cause you to pull forward if not paying attention.
I filled up with a new tank of gas, and thought it went away, but it appears to be back now. Any ideas?
Does your Explorer have A/C. Sounds like the compressor is cycling, fast like the charge is low. Have a Mechanic buddy check it out for you or take it in. Good luck.
i am having the exact same problem. it only happens when it is cold outside. after much research, i found out that it was due to defective intake manifold gaskets. there was a tsb issued in regards to this and they extended the warranty on this part to 72k miles. after that you are screwed. interestingly enough there is a class action lawsuit against ford for this exact issue. the dealership wanted $550 to fix it, even after admitting it was defective.
i called around and i am actually getting it done tomorrow for $250.
Wow, can I get some more info on this from you? Mine does it all the time, whenever the AC is on, reving up every 10 seconds or so. I've got 77K miles on mine, so I guess there will be no warrenty coverage for me.
