Second Oil change - Schaeffer 9000 UOA

I just got the UOA results back from Terry Dyson on the second run of Schaeffer 9000. These are posted below with the previous two UOA's (one Schaeffer 9000 and the other Motorcraft 15W40). Looks like all wear metals continue to drop!!! This time the fuel dilution crept up a little and so did the water. I am pretty certain that this is from the increase in idling that I did during cold mornings. Terry said that I really didn't need much idling in the AM (unless it was my choice to get the cab warm before driving). 30 seconds to a minute would do. Just take it easy until the engine and oil warms up. I will plan to do less idling.

The oil viscosity continues to be very stable. Hopefully the picture below turns out to be readable - it contains the info on engine miles and miles on the oil.

A little hard to read, but is that 1178 ppm of water?? Was the oil hot when the sample was taken?

Sorry about the quality. Yes the Karl Fischer test came back at 1178 ppm water. I believe the threshold (upper limit) is 0.1 wt percent (1000 ppm) so it is a little over the threshold number. I must say that I have never seen water in a Blackstone analysis - only MRT. Previous water numbers from MRT were 466 and 692.

The oil was hot, but I did not take a mid-stream sample. I just drained a little less than a quart and then caught the sample. I will do the full change out in 500 miles (this will be a full 5000 mile OCI). I was just curious on what I would see with this oil sample technique. I may catch another sample from the oil change and send it to Blackstone to compare - may be interesting.

Never seen water in any UOA either, that's why it seemed strange. Wonder where it's coming from. Thankfully not coolant. Has the humidity been really high were you are?

Are you going to start stretching out the OCI?

moebdick -

Here in South Texas it has definitley been colder and there has been a lot of drizzle (no hard rains). This could have played a part. I drove 20 miles, got home, waited 30-45 minutes, then changed the oil. The oil should have been hot, but who knows. The reason the moisture was still present (did not vaporize during the drive) must be related to the engine not being all that hot. Well, it is something to watch. The TAN number supports that the slightly elevated water is probably real.

daddgonemad -

I will probably "step-out" and go all the way to 7500 miles with this oil. It seems that it could go much more, but I am not interested in taking any chances - especially seeing how the water and fuel dilution numbers can creep up unexpectedly.

Makes sense. Looks like that oil should handle 7500 no problem. Were the insolubles really zero? You can probably burn that water out of there easy enough.

Interestingly enough, I have sent one previous sample to both Blackstone and to MRT Labs. The insolubles from MRT came back at 0 and the Blackstone result was 0.2%. I believe both results were at or below the MDL - minimum detectable limit. My opinion - One lab reported as 0, the other reported the MDL number. We will see how this next comparison turns out.
