Dual gas tank problem

I have a '91 F250 w/ 460 enfine and dual tanks. Just replaced my rear tank which was done without problems by a non-dealer garage. I filled up the front tank to near full then filled the new rear tank to half full. I switched to the rear tank and several miles later I stopped, smelled gas, looked for a trail of gas behind me and saw gas gushing out of the front fill hole. After switching to the front tank the gushing stopped. I checked the level in my rear tank by switching back and I had lost nearly 1/4 tank and the gushing started again. I switched back to the front tank and all is well except I can't use my new rear tank.

The dealer is not helpful in giving me an idea of what is wrong. Also id non-committal about extended warranty possiblilties with the history of the fuel line problems.

So.....

Any ideas on cause and cost of repair? Fuel pump? Check valves? Cross over switch? Large dollars??????

Thanks for your help.

I would almost think that the lines were crossed when the new tank was installed. you need to go back to the place that installed it and get them to fix it.

This is a fairly common problem on Ford dual tank setups. There was a recall for it, but I'm not sure what years were covered or mileage limitations. I suggest taking it back to the garage that did the fuel tank, or you could call a Ford dealer for info on the recall.

It was safety recall 93S68 Cross tank fuel flow condition: Damaged check valve. Dated Sept 93. Im trying to find the letter they sent me extending the deadline and mileage. They replace the check valve between each fuel supply line and also the fuel pressure regulator. I'll keep trying to find the info for you, unless some one else has it handy.

Thanks for your help.....

I have to say though that the idea of crossed lines should not have happened because all that the mechanics did was drop th old tank, remove the sending unit, replace the sending unit into the new tank and strap in the tank.

I have been driving on the front tank and the guage is not moving so I must be feding the front tank from the rear tank. Also, I'm not sure I am drawing gas at all from the front tank.

Ther is a member < xldavidson > who responded to another forum regarding recalls/safety notices, etc. a few days ago. If anyone has contact with him I would like him to read this thread.

Thanks.

It was my thread. And this thread, itself, was a continuation of the original thread, if you want to read the very lengthy, gory details of my fuel-related driveability problem. My tank switching valve is crossfeeding the bypassed fuel to the opposite tanks, but that may or may not be giving me what I feel in an intermittent lean condition.

Here is the thread, in case I fail to link it properly:https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...hreadid=182996

The gentleman you seek, Joe, is in this thread and you can send him a message, I believe, by clicking on the word "Profile" in one of his posts and looking for a prompt re: sending email. Don't tell him I sent you! J/k He is very sharp and helpful.

Before you contact him, you should read all of that post on Recalls, as I updated it the other day--I don't know if you read the latest. I tried to synthesize what I learned about recalls from Joe and the other, helpful members here, as well as what I got from two FoMoCo. Cust. Svce. Reps. Hope it helps.

Merry Christmas.

Peter

Actually, you should probably call the toll free number I was given in that recall post. FoMoCo ran my VIN in OASIS with no hassle, unlike my local dealer. That way you will know if your truck is covered by an actual recall or not. Mine wasn't. Good luck.

has anything been resolved concerning your problem?

I have the exact same problem on my '88 F150 302. When switched to my rear tank, it fills up my front tank and then starts to empty excess gas out onto the ground when the front tank fills up.

I can't believe Ford doesn't know about or has a recall out for this SAFETY problem.

hoho- It sounds to me like maybe you might be having a problem with your switching relay and a check valve. They might have gotten some debris in the line when they switched it . Maybe there was some debris in the tank from manufacture. If there is debris it could be making the check valve jam and subsequently not let it do its job.
