I have a 1983 f250 with a 460 eng, 4 speed man. trans. I possibly may purchase a 1972 460 engine that has been redone with high performane parts. The engine has an edlebrock intake and 4bbl carb. and edlebrock water pump. The engine is complete with new distr., wire & plugs. also new crank, pistons, camshaft, & rods.
First I would like to know if this engine will "plug & play" in my '83 without complications and also approx value of this '72 rebuild.
I am new to this site and it looks great with a wealth of info.
Thanks guys for your help in advace.
The flywheel Will be a problem. The 72 is 0 balance and the 79-up is external. If it was a C6 that would not be a problem, just use the one on the motor. Finding a 0 balance flywheel to work correctly with the Hyd clutch will require a new "aftermarket" flywheel.
Thanks 7K42S for the info. Are you saying that it should bolt up fine and that all I need to do is take the flywheel off of the old motor and put it on the new motor ?
Thanks Again,
Doss

He is saying it's not going to work, unless you do some rigging or buy a special flywheel(sounds expensive).
Thanks Dave, I miss interpreted his post. DAH!!!!
There are some BBF Billet Manual steel 184 tooth flywheels for sale on eBay for $110.00. would one of these work?
I apologize for being "not much mechanic" and I live out in the boondocks not privy to people in the know.
I would talk to another ford guy "in the know" and verify what was said about the zero balance. I did look up flexplates for the different engines, and they are different.
If you verified that it is zero balance, I would hunt up a machine shop that could possibly take the out of balance weight off your 460 flywheel, or maybe could add weight to the other side to balance it.
is your truck an EEC? I know conversion to an earlier ignition set-up, (new box, changing the wiring harness to an early style) is more than most "shadetree" mechanics want to take on...
I did the conversion on my 83' because I went to an edelbrock manifold and carb, and an aftermarket distributer, so the computer was removed, wiring harness trimmed down to the essential wires, and luckily we had an old harness to get the old style plugs from....
You should just be able to find a pre - 79 flywheel. Look on e-bay.
Use your hardware from the 83. Is the distributor with the 72 engine a stock Ford one? If so, just use the distributor from the 83 engine. That doesn't matter either, just use the 83 distributor anyway. No problem wiring anything then. Should be a plug and play.
THANKS to all you guys for the info. I have decided to go with a "made to order rebuilt". This is a great site and you all keep up the great info. The only thing I would like to see on the questions asked is that the question submitter post a final response to how the problem got solved as I am researching other problems and if I knew how someone actually fixed a problem I might not have to bother you guys. Thanks again, Doss
