I need to take the headlight **** off of a 78 so I can get the plastic gauge cluster thing off. I'm gonna make a billet aluminum one and I don't see what gets that **** off. Does it release from the back like some classic stangs?
There should be a clip within the **** which wedges itself around the shaft. look at the underside of the **** and you will find a slot. Take a small screwdriver in the slot pulling towards you as you pull the **** off.
I have 2 1979 Fords .It should be like mine . There is a white plastic button you can,t see on top off the **** assembly behind the dash. You have to reach up behind the dash and feel for it .Push down on it and the stem comes out . It should be the only thing that moves. I also have a 1993 Cougar and it is the same way.
Snake your hand up under the dash and feel for a little button (like in the above mentioned picture).
This is how I did it:
Press the button and pull the **** out gently till it stops. You should be able to feel the button move a little when the **** stops.
Release the button and push the **** in ever so slightly, then repress the button and the **** should pull right out of the dash.
I had trouble using your technique, don’t know why. The shaft lock kept hanging on the button preventing release. Pressing in slightly after releasing the button seemed to correct the issue.
