Although I'm new to the board and this is my second problem post with my 97, I really do love my truck...it's not a POS!
Anyway, on with the problem. When I start the truck, the interior lights come on as normal. The problem is at different times, the lights might stay on for several seconds or might go out right away. They have even stayed on for as long as 30 seconds. Also, there is a noticeable sound under the dash when the lights finally go off. I guess that is the switch?
Here's the weird part. Exactly 12 months ago, the same problem occured and lasted for about a week. I'm only half-way through the week this year and I'm curious to see if it fixes itself.
Another note, I had to replace the battery this Summer whether associated with this problem or not. The clue that the battery neded replaced was the electrical system, i.e. door locks, interior lights, etc. going haywire.
I have the same problem. My expy is a 97 xlt with almost 100k on it. My interior light also shuts off when it feels like it. This problem starting happening about 2 1/2 months ago. I'm going to clean and lube the doors. Will let you all know if that solves the problem.
You need a fluid with a light cleaning and lubricating quality, like WD-40. Don't use a heavy oil, or the light switches will become even more stubborn as the temperatures become lower and the oil thickens.
This might be stupid, but where are the light switches? I am having the same problem. I thought that it was the door seal but i replaced that and it still does it.

Bump....I'm wondering the same thing. Are the switches internal or activated by sensors? My Expy has been doing this on an off for a while. The interior lights stay on after it is shut down for about 15-20 minutes before a timer kicks them off. Not good on the battery. They will also stay on for about 30 seconds after start-up. Anyone figure this one out yet?
The switches are located in the door latch. Dumb design. You can't really see well them unless you disassemble the door. Just open the door and spray the whole door latch with some WD40 every once in a while. Remember to do all of the doors.
Had the exact same problem with my 1998 Ranger XLT. Read a post that recommended a couple of squirts of WD-40 into the door latches. Worked like a charm. Open and close the doors a few times to work the lubricant in well.
What a relief to learn that it wasn't going to require electrical work or new latches.
