F350 Payload

I'm a new guy on the boards and have spent several days searching out info for payload capabilities for the F350. The archives are great but have not found to my satisfaction a good answer.
I plan on buying a truck that can carry jet skies in the bed and tow a trailer. I need a crew cab and want the PSD. I'm not convinced that I'll need the 4x4, although it would be nice to have for that 1% of the time you really need it. My payload will be as follows, jet ski rack "toyTrax" 400lbs, jet skies about 1500lbs, one two seater and one three seater, tongue weight about 500-600lbs for trailer, depending on what I end up getting, roughly 2500lbs. Now I need to carry the family plus some gear, figure I need 3500lbs total payload. I live in California, and I see that I can only get 9700 GVWR, why the difference? Is something missing, or is it because of additional smog equipment?
I would like to stay with the SRW configuration. The 4x2 LB SRW gives me 3155 and the 4x4 LB SRW gives me 2740 according to a load guide I downloaded from Fleetford.com. This amount is shy off my payload requirements. I presume that an additional 150 lbs can be added as this is calculated into the vehicle weight, so the above numbers would change to 3305 and 2890 respectively. What other equipment could I add to this truck to enable it to carry my load, although illegal, if I go with the 4x4.

F350 Payload

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 08-Nov-02 AT 06:06 PM (EST)]F350 CrewCab(CC) 4x4 Longbed (LB) Single Rear Wheel (SRW) with a Powerstroke Deisel (PSD) and 3.73 Limited Slip Rearend. The PSD will most probably be the new 6.0L w/5sp auto.
Based on the weight limits in the Forddirect.com build site, I'll have 2704 payload, 2905 if you're not in California. From what I've gleamed from other posts, that includes one 150lb driver. One of the archieved post took me to another web page and in that thread I read that the payload doesn't include 150lbs per seat. So that means if I get the 40/20/40 seat, I'll have 6 riders for a total off 900 additional pounds, less the 150 thats allready included should give me and additional 750lbs (5x150) for a grand total of 3454, the 750 plus 2704. The camper package would presumably add another 200lbs payload, putting the truck back at 2905lbs. That would make sense, 9900 GVWR minus the payload of 3654 is about 6246lbs. Real close to the curb weight that dealer says it is. Does this make any sense?

F350 Payload

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 08-Nov-02 AT 07:42 PM (EST)]On my last road trip this summer I saw a truck similarly equiped on the road. I can't remember what the size of the truck was, F250 or the 350, but from what I'm reading in these posts it must have been the F350. It had the jet skies in the back and was towing a travel trailer. I figure I can do the same, just need to make sure I have the right load range bufore I buy. Just incase you ask, it wasn't a dually or the F450. Is anybody else towing this type of rig??

F350 Payload

(Discounting the "Legality argument" for a moment)
IMHO, you won't have any problems with that load. By its description, you will have a reasonable low center of gravity (cg) in the truck bed. You should invest in good tires (if they still come with the junk Fireblowns). I use E-rated Michelin LTX M/S 265/75r/16. Another help would be Firestone RideRite air bags or Air Spring. They will take any sag out of the rear end with the load in place. When you unload, you can deflate the bags to 5 psi and maintain a stock ride.

My Brother in law has a F350 SRW 2 WD PSD Crewcab with long bed utility box fully loaded all the time. He easily carries as much or more than you describe and his truck drives very nicely. Your new 6.0 should be lighter than his 7.3 to boot!

You could always go Dually in a F350. A F450 will rattle your teeth out when empty

F350 Payload

I think I'll be getting the dually, after an extensive search of information on payloads, that will be my best choice. Living in California, I'm penalized on payload, better safe then sorry. Besides, I'll have more versatility if I ever choose to go 5'er!!

Thanks to every that posted here and to the other posts that gave valuable info...F350 PSD 4x4 LB DRW all the way!!!!!!

F350 Payload

i remember when a 1 ton truck was all you ever needed..........travel trailers and campers weigh less today than 20 yrs ago, dirt and hay still weigh the same as they did back then. be realistic how many of the guys in the big trucks really need what they are driving?

As is often the case with dealers, they don't have a clue. The wet weight, with driver will be over 7000 lbs for the truck. My dually is 7200 lbs and it's a V10. The PSD is another 500 lbs. I think the curb weights are done with a truck stripped down to nothing and a driver sitting on a milk crate.
