Which motor do you have? I have gas, so I am going to stick with Motorcraft 5w20 mixed synthetic. If you have a Diesel, I don't know anything about the weight requirements etc. Again though, if you have a 5.4, or a V10, gas motor, I don't think M1 makes a 5w20... do they? As far as MPG, I don't think you are going to get any better than you are running the factory specified 5w20. Just my opinion.
My first oil change, I used Motorcraft 5W20. My second oil change, I used Mobil 1 5W30. Last oil change, I used Mobil 1 0W30. The mileage has been the same with these 3 oils, between 12 mpg and 14 mpg city driving and 18 to 20 mpg highway driving. I changed the oil in the transmission and used Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF and it does shift a lot better now and it whines a little less when cold.
I have used syn for over 20 years and keep good records. I would be very hard pressed to prove that I save gas.
Since syn is claimed to get you single digit percentage gains, you can't expect to see much change especially with a vehicle that gets mid teens on a lucky day. With single digit percentm you will see less than 1 mpg which is easily lost in the noise of many variables that affect mileage on every tank.
But I do use syn for extended temperature range and other claimed benefits.
Check out the oil forum for years of pros and cons on syn versus dino.
I have switched to Amsoil 5W-20. This oil is one of the leaders in synthetic. I hade cold pison slap and cold mornings in my V10, I changed from the motorcraft synblend to the Amsoil. The cold knock was gone and has not come back. The oil is more $$$ but to me it is worth it. Also, the only synthetic oil to state a 7500 mile or 6 month oil change cycle. NO other oil claims this. When you drive 25K a year....laying underneath you truck every month gets old quick.
I totally agree with boxcar1974, I use nothing but Amsoil 5wW-20. I've been using since day one so I can't tell you if it gives you better MPG, but I've had no problems and it is the best oil on the market in my opinion.

Actually, that's 0W20 that Mobil1 recommends. I just looked it up. I don't know, seems really thin to me. We are getting into 3in1 oil territory I think.
I can't really comment on the fuel mileage benefits of using synthetics but I can definitely say that it is superior to conventional oils. I use nothing but synthetics in my boat. That engine is put under a heck of a lot more stress than you could ever dream of putting an automobile engine under. I have my BB Chevy motor above 4K almost all the time and sometimes at WOT for 3 minutes or more. Synthetics don't breakdown due to heat as fast as conventional oils. One note of caution. Don’t use synthetics until a motor is thoroughly broke in. The superior lubricating qualities will actually prevent the rings from properly seating.
