I have a Dana 60 front axle that I am putting in my F250, the 2 front u-joints out at the wheels are shot. I know how to disassemble and replace them but my question is....Is there supposed to be anything at the end of the axle tube to support the axle or does it get supported by the stub shaft through the u-joint. There is a large amount of play in the ujoints which allows the axle inside to float. I am assuming there are inner seals back at the pumpkin to prevent oil from coming out down the axle tube. Is there also a seal or cap that is supposed to be at the end of the axle tubes also? From all the exploded views I have seen there is nothing, I am sure once the u-joints are replaced the play will no longer be there but I just want to make sure. Thanks in advance
The wheel bearing supports the stub & inner shaft along with the U-joint.
There is nothing at the end of the axle tube or in the inner knuckle that supports the axle.
Yes, the axles seals are located inside the pumpkin, and some of the play you are experiencing with the warn u-joints will go away but there will always be some play with the stub shaft/u-joint/inner shaft assembly, it's designed that way because of the movement of the u-joint while rotating as you turn the steering wheel.
