Axle spline count.

I was told buy a Autowrecker that if I brought my axle tag in he could tell me if it was a 28 or 31 spline 9", with out pulling an axle shaft, is this true?

If it's a 9" in a truck, which yours is, it's a 31 spline.

Edit, and it has an open diff with 3.50 gears

Unless someone swapped in an early 9" along the way. My '67 F-100 had the original 9" under it and it had 28 spline axles.
