Question 71 fuel pump

I've got a friend who has a 71 f250 4x4 with a straight six. When looking at his engine, I noticed that the fuel pump had the canister facing up. It looks upside down to me and we made a bet regarding that. Shouldn't the canister face down to catch heavy debris and water? Is this thing upside down or will I lose the bet?

It faces up. Actually, I don't think the position would really matter. The filter fits on a tube inside the housing. So it should be able to work in any position. But yes, facing up is normal on the ford sixes. BTW...I've noticed something weird, and potentially handy. If you need a gasket for that canister some day,I noticed the gasket from an old FL-1A oil filter seems to be a good fit. I keep a spare under the hood in case I ever need it. MK

New filters have always had a gasket in the box whenever I have installed one. FYI.......
