Has anyone here bored there 300 six engine themselves.
I am a machinist and have the machines to do this on at work but I haven't tried anything like this yet. I am hopping to get some pointers on what type of tools are used to bore out the block.
I am thinking that I should be able to bore out the block and deck the block to +.005 clearence all in one set-up on a cnc mill.
Anyone here familiar with surface finishes. I was woundering what surface finish is needed in the bore, and on the deck.
I hope these don't sound like dumb ? and someone here can help me out.
The final finish on the cylinders is usually done with a 400 grit stone. The crosshatching is supposed to be a certain angle, but I don't know what that angle is.
CNC for this type of work would be nice, but most CNC machines aren't capable of machine work of this caliber. To properly deck the block you need a machine capable of spinning about a 10" flycutter while remaining completely rigid and leaving a specific surface finish.
FWIW, you are probably better off just paying to get it done. Around here cylinder boring and honing goes for about $10/cylinder. You couldn't buy the fixtures to do the work for that, and if you havn't done it before $60 is cheap insurance. Decking the block would probably add another $50.
curious...what's involved in putting larger valves in the head?? i remember somebody mentioning this in a previous post somewhere...and what other machine work can be done to a head to help w/ air flow/exhaust flow?
