My truck runs out of gas at 1/4 of a tank. Called the dealer, they're going to fix. My brother just purchased an F250 SD PS Lariat etc.. and he also ran out of gas at 1/4 of a tank. Is this an epidemic or what? Running out of gas is no fun..
17316 FUEL INDICATION CONCERNS - FUEL SIGNAL TO INSTRUMENT CLUSTER - SERVICE TIP
SOME 2000-2004 SUPER DUTY F-SERIES, EXCURSION, EXPEDITION/NAVIGATOR, AVIATOR, ESCAPE, BLACKWOOD, EXPLORER/MOUNTAINEER AND F-150'S EQUIPPED WITH 5.4L, 6.0L AND 6.8L ENGINES MAY HAVE FUEL INDICATION CONCERNS. TO CHECK THE FUEL SIGNAL TO THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER WHEN INVESTIGATING FUEL INDICATION COMPLAINTS, USE AN NGS. PULL UP THE FUELLVL PID IN THE HEC DIAGNOSTICS SECTION (GREEN CARD). THE PID READINGS ARE IN PERCENT OF TANK FULL, SO 50% SHOULD HAVE A FUEL GAGE INDICATION OF ABOUT 1/2 TANK. THE PID VALUE RESPONDS INSTANTLY TO FUEL SLOSH AND VEHICLE TILT, BUT THE FUEL GAGE RESPONDS MORE SLOWLY TO COMPENSATE FOR SLOSH. THE GAGE MAY TAKE UP TO 20 MINUTES WITH KEY ON TO MATCH A STABLE FUEL INPUT SIGNAL. IF IT DOES, THE FUEL INDICATION SYSTEM IS OK. IF THE PID VALUE IS '000' THE CLUSTER IS NOT RECEIVING A VALID FUEL SIGNAL FROM THE TANK.
I have run my truck down to the E\ mark several times. When filling up, I top off up to the top of the filler neck and have put in 30 to 32 gal several times.
Given that my tank size is specified as 29 gallons, I conclude that my gauge is reading reasonably close - and that I've cut it too close a couple of times :-)
There are a couple of times when I've filled it up and it has pegged out at around 3/4 full and then slowly creeped up over the next 1/2 hour as I was driving.
THE GAGE MAY TAKE UP TO 20 MINUTES WITH KEY ON TO MATCH A STABLE FUEL INPUT SIGNAL.....
Clarification = (during testing.....)
Follow-up question =
What is the time delay usually associated with the fuel guage for an accurate reading -- such as coming out of a curve and moving down a straight-a-way ??
the slosh module should prevent flucuating gage readings.....after you fill up, start truck, within 60 sec. you should have an accurate reading off dash gage....going around curves etc. should not effect reading of gage.....however, if you park on a hill, then start and drive, you may notice a difference in gage level for up to a minute or two....
