I think those superduties are tough. We have put ours through hell, and it reminds me of my 78. I agree parts cost more, but they never break. The only thing i do not like is the BW t-case, iwould rather have the gear to gear 205.
I know of a guy with a 79-460 loaded with options & alterations.
There is a checker plate that makes up the box area. It always has a receiver for pulling a 5th wheel.
Major considerations are your ability and the condition of the truck. Rust is bad. Look above the rear wheels, bottom corners of the cab, floor-boards under drivers feet, bottom of doors, edges of hood. If it starts relatively easily, has decent throttle response and doesn't smoke, then you are half-way there. Drive it around a little. If the steering is loose by 1/2 turn or more beware of worn out tie-rods and steering components. If it bounces like crazy over every bump and you feel sea-sick then the shocks are gone. If anything whines or growls from the area of the rear differential or transmission, suspect old age or possibly serious problems.
In short, it should drive like an old truck. Nothing fancy, the seat won't be that comfortable. The steering might be loose, the brakes might be less than stellar, and everything might rattle. But the important things to look for are loud unusual noises, grinding sounds, rust, smoke and leaks.
I have to tell you guys...I'm really impressed with your responses and the genuine sense of support your offerring for one of the new guys. I'm just flat-out impressed! I'm going to call the guy and get more information about the truck...if he's already sold it...than I wonder if you guys know of any of 78 or 79 F-250's with a 460 that might be a good buy in your areas? One way or the other, I'll have my old truck and you can bet I'll be leaning on your expertise. I've really enjoyed the gas mileage thread, lots of info there I was already considering doing on the truck I don't even have yet! My only complaint about FTE is that you can't email directly until fifty posts - a few of you guys have clearly gone above and beyond with you experience/posts - and I'd like to establish some sort of more consistent correspondence as I embark upon this process. All the best fellas...and Merry Christmas to all!
