I want to get some strong/good u-joints for the front axle of my truck (d44 TTB). I just have your everyday over the counter generic u-joint right now. I snaped one of them already (stupid driving by me though). I've heard of using dana spicer or I think CTM. Whats out there that is really high quality/strong stuff? Also, where can I get them?
CTM are the strongest out there....but you'll pay out the wazoo for it. And remember that if the u-joints are the strongest item in the driveline, when something needs to give, it'll be something else that will be more costly and more difficult to replace. I run spicer in my jeep.
Spicer is fine, available from NAPA, and get the ones with grease zerks. I agree with not going stronger on the UJ. Better to replace three UJs then even one stub shaft. Getting out and seeing your UJ survived, but, both shafts have their ears ripped off is not a good thing.
If its a daily driver go with the new heavy duty spicers. The CTMs are the strongest but the way that they are designed you need to grease them all the time.
Well, I broke the u-joint next to the left tire. In doing so, the ears on the stub shaft snapped off and the ears on the inner shaft bent. I got a new stub shaft for 15 bucks, put it back together for now, but since the ears on the inner shaft are a little bent I still need to get one of those and replace it. I don't see how you could break a u-joint without damaging the ears in the process......?
Are you sure you can get the spicers at napa.....? I dont remember seeing them but guess i could be wrong. Anybody used the brute force u-joints? I didnt know where to get spicers from so i ended up just buying those for now for my rear driveshaft.

yes Napa sells them....spicer is what I run under my truck!
the brute force joints are great fpr daily driving and all but i busted 3 with my 93 F-150 351W.
Brute Force ujoints suck. I blew one up with my stock motor in my rear driveshaft 900 miles after installing it. Cracked clean accross the body of the joint. In the process of breaking, it destroyed the driveshaft, rear yoke, fuel tank, brake line, parking brake line, and scared the living crap out of me when it threw my truck around on the high way......Get Spicer joints and live in peace.
Yes, I did have the ARB locked. Here's the story...
We got 2 1/2 feet of snow and my work was a mess, no where to really park. There was a snowbank that I could paralell park on, so I did (passanger tires on the bank, other tires not). I went into work, and had to leave so I drove away. I came back and said, well it was pretty cool (articulation) last time, so why not try a little harder (I like to park in interesting ways because not everyone else can). On second attempt, I had the two rear tires in the bank, and the passanger front tire. The drivers front was just in slushy stuff. I locked the ARB, but there was a car behind me so I had to be careful not to hit it. I had my head out the window trying to backup, and the rear of the truck slid down the hill, which made the front wheels turn (and we all know that giving power while turning the wheel hard is not good). The steering is a little tricky with a locker in the front, so with my drivers position I wasn't really able to correct, and it broke. Stupid me. The front left was on wet pavement, where the rest were in snow, it's my own fault.
