had the same problem with my 88 EB...turned out to be the rheostat...a close look inside revealed a small break in the coiled wire within the device...
did you buy a new dimmer, or did you grab one from the junk yard ?
The digital dash is not terribly interesting; there is a section with a speedometer display that switches between mph and km/h, and another section with a multi-function display that shows fuel level, battery voltage, coolant temperature, and oil pressure (just displaying the state of a pressure switch actually) in sequence with the push of a button. One good feature about the instrument display is that if any of the functions it is monitoring goes out of range, it starts to flash and beep. The disadvantage is that you can only see one function at a time.
It does sound like the rheostat. My old 87 and 94 had the same problem. I had one replaced in my new 94 with only 3000Ks. The get very hot and then the solder/ coils break. Your 87 switch should have 3 postions on it. The best thing to do is buy a manuel. It will help out. Even the Clitons/Motors 19$ ones are good. I have the Ford ones for trucks and vans from 90-00 cars from 65-75. They are more confusing, than the cheap ones. They are good for trans/AC/pollution problems though.
where can i get a new dash dimmer switch for my 91?i bought one off ebay but it only has four wires instead of six.i could juryrig it but id rather use the right part.never mind. i found one on ebay listed as 1992-96 but the numbers match.
