I've been checking out the White Night brand backup lighting kit ($99) for my '02 F250 SD CC. It's hard enough backing this monster up, nevermind the tinted rear windows that don't exactly help visibility, esp at night!
Anyone have a backup light setup? I've also seen just the single clear lens back up light. I kind of like the lighting kit though because it has two lights and they're angled so that they light up both corners of the back of the truck so you can get lighting on both sides when backing up. They also have a switch on them that allows you to activate the lights even if you're parked or just need light in the back (ex: mounting a trailer on a hitch at night! We've all been there, done that fun chore... and no one ever seems to have a flashlight, right!) LOL....
Anyway, any feedback about the light kits? The single light backup light seems like it kinda limits the lighting to whatever side you mount and angle it at...
I mounted apair of Hella backup lights (Hella #81105) to the ends my trailer hitch and wired them so they came on automatically with the stock backups or when I threw the switch. They work very nicely. But if I could have found a pre-pacaged kit that did the same thing, I would have jumped on it in a heartbeat. Summit offers a couple of backup kits as does Jeg's. I buy my Hella stuff from Susquehanna Motorsports at www.rallylights.com
Check out KC HiLities, They make a back-up light kit, that I have on my truck. You can either wire it into your existing back-up lights to come one when you switch into reverse. Or wire them into a switch, to use whenever. Here is where I ordered mine from. http://www.aztrucks.com/Product.asp?product=79
I got the White Night backup lights on my F-150. They work great and are really bright. I got the one that slips over the hitch so you can still use the hitch without removing the lights. I got them a little cheaper at JCWhitney ($75 I think). Its a nice set up, just bolt on and hook up the wires, no drilling or anything.
My dad has the KC Hilites on his superduty, they work great and take a beating, the only thing that ever was a lense that was about $5 and went on in 2 minutes
Thanks everyone, for the feedback and pictures! I'll go check out the KC HiLites website and research their backup light kit further and compare it to the White Night kit. The KC has lights at opposing sides of the bumper vs. the White Night which has both near the center hitch but are angled toward each corner.
I'm sure both work fine, so it'll likely become a matter of cost.
I puy 2 tractor trapazoid patern 55w flood lights on my roof rack and wired them to a 7 way hitch light plug. that way they are unpluged when backing mt boat and trailer and not blinding me by reflecting off the white trailer.
I bought a pair of foglights from Wal-mart for under $20. Bolted them to the bumper support?(angled piece from framed to bumper) Lights up everything in back of the truck
Thanks for replying, guys! I thought about how difficult (or not) it would be to just bolt on a couple of clear fog lights like "offroadjunkiex" is talking about. Probably save a decent chunk of money and it kind of looks like the KC Hilites bar referenced above. So, I guess it just depends on me deciding how much I like the nice packaging setup of the White Night vs. just bolting up a fog light or two under the rear bumper.
I drilled a hole into the bumper brace mounts under mine. It took awile since I used a cordless drill. Be careful of the hot shavings falling on you, they hurt!!!
i bought a set of back-up lights the other day along with a switch. i was going to wire them up so they come on only when you flip the switch but it would be good if they came on automatically too when in reverse. i do not want them to work only when in reverse cause i do not want to be hooking up the horse trailer while in reverse gear. that would be a little dangerous. i am not an electrical whiz so can somebody tell me how to wire them so they will come on in reverse and still have the option to switch them on while in park so i can hook up the trailer?
I have a wiring diagram in a bitmap format but no way of posting it here. I'll email you my address, the e-mail addresses on this forum are blind, so if you want a copy respond to my e-mail and I'll send the diagram to you
Thanks Strangeranger. i tried to respond to your email but got a "sorry that user has specified that he doesn't want email through this forum" or something like that. i gather that your set up to not get email or something. if it's not a hassle please try again. really appreciate the help. thanks.
The KC HiLites are nice but are easy to break if you do any hardcore wheelin. They're nice for around town or hooking up a trailer but if you come off a legde or going up a steep hill you'll probably hit them a few times unless your truck is lifted enough
