Just purchased 6 inc bds supesion, I am now runing 30.6 inch tires and have 8.8 3.55 . At 65 mph tach is at 1800 with e40d transmission. I want to run 35 tires what gears should i run? The Charts that i have seen dont take account for my overdrive.
Run the standard gear ratio calculator, just change the ratio by .38 or whatever the difference is between o.d and 3rd. example .62 o.d. would be .38 difference. Or 3.55 to 3.17.
What are youre plans for this truck? Is this going to be a daily driver, or a pure offroad machine? If daily, I would sugguest 4.10s. You should get decent mileage and rpms all around. If you are going offroad with it, 4.56. You will definatley be happy with the extra grunt they give you for plowing through mud pits, sand dunes, etc.
Daily driver, and sand on the beaches on the weekends, mud once and while.Should i get the gear change first,or will 3.55 be alright till i have the money to change out the gears.
You "can" run with the stock gears, but youre power will feel like you are running a five liter in a Peterbilt. If you do not change out first, dont put it on youre to-do list with painting the house, visiting the in-laws, etc . From what you said, it sounds like 4.10s should be the best all around bet.
Do you have any experience indexing and installing gears, or know of people who do? The material cost will probably be around 600 (ring and pinion sets only, carriers extra). The major killer is the installation costs. Be prepared to shed a tear
I dont know what independant shops will charge you, but my father looked into it a few years ago and I think the total (with materials) was close to 1700. I am pulling that from memory though, so I cant say for certain that was the actual figure. You might want to hit up the drivetrain forum and see if anyone over there knows.
That makes sense then, give you a better price for the combination work. That is probably the best you will be able to find. The price I listed was actually from a dealership (I know..highest price, but we know the owner of the dealership as well as the service manager, so we try and give them work).
and dont forget you need to change the front gears too.maybe you can find a truck in the junk yard that has 4.10 gears and just swap out the diferentials.this would definately save you some money.or put 31 1050 15 on it and be happy with that.
