i have a problem with my speedometer. it doesnt work. i keep taking the dash apart and cleaning and finally came up with the conclusion that its probably the cable. can someone tell me how to get to it??? oh, its a 72f100 if that helps any.
The first thing to try is the inner cable. You can usually get a replacement cheap. You just pull the cable out the top of the cable housing. If it is broken you will have to get the lower end out from the lower end by removing it from the tranny. If the outer housing is kinked or worn you can replace the entire thing but is a bit more money. When the speedo dies the first thing to check is the cable. At least on our trucks it is easy to fix.
No trouble. The housing is the thing that has the nut that screws onto the back of the speedo. The housing is about 5/16" outside diameter. The actual thing that drives the speedo is the inner cable that is about 1/8''. It is in the center of the nut and has a square metal piece that goes into the back of the speedo. If it is in one piece you can grab the metal end with a pair of pliers and pull the whole thing out. If it has broken in the middle then the bottom part will stay in the hollow housing. The housing fits into the transmission. The other possibility is that the drive gear in the tranny or the driven gear on the end of the housing is worn out. If either of these are bad it is more of a hassel to fix but still not too bad. Good luck.
yeah its most likely your cable i think the cables for the f-100's is about 82 inches, there 20 bucks so its no big deal, i had to get one for my truck also
Just a note, if you have dual exhaust be carefull with how you route the cable because if it is too close to the pipe it is gonna melt the outside of the cable and then it aint gonna work. If you don't have dual exhaust just disregard this post.
