I have a '98 F-150 XLT with the Romeo 4.6, and the MIL is on. I am using the Acton reader. Checking the trouble codes revealed two instances of P1401 - which I understand is insufficient EGR pressure. I replaced the EGR valve (from Ford, not parts house) and blew out the EGR tube. The restrictor in the tube seems OK, but the trouble codes re-appear after driving less than 1/4 mile.
The engine also has a problem with higher octane fuel: it pings excessively. This would appear to supprt the EGR theory, but before I start changing more and more expensive parts, do you have any guidance?
Thanks in advance!
The most common cause of a P1401 is a bad DPFE sensor.
It's a small sensor at the top of the 2 hoses that run off the pipe from the exhaust manifold to the EGR valve. It has 1 connector on it and the 2 hoses.
The DPFE tells the PCM how much EGR is flowing so it can adjust the timing and air/fuel ratio to suit. If it's not working right it can cause it to ping.
Update: It turned out out to be both the DPFE and the EGR solenoid. I replaced one, then the other before the codes would not return.
Thanks for the help!
