I have a '92 Bronco and I was wondering how much RMS power does the stock head unit put out? I have just the plain unit with no cd or tape player. Also, will it hurt my new aftermarket speakers (220 watt max, 35 RMS max) to run on my stock head unit, beacuse I don't have enough cash to go and get an aftermarket unit yet? Thanks for any help.
Don't know the exact specs on the stock unit but it is pretty lame, at least for the standard unit, not the Premium Sound or JBL versions, both are uncommon in trucks but might be in a Bronco, and they will be labled. But since you don't have tape or CD, you probably have the real vanilla unit.
From what I vaguely recall the stock units are about watts per channel and should not hurt better speakers. There is one gotcha in that most Fords don't use common ground like many aftermarkets do. See www.installdr.com for a discussion of speaker grounding and probably info about the stock power ratings.
From my experience a head unit with little power CAN damage bigger and better speakers over a long period of time . But from your specs i wouldnt worry about it. In other words if you hooked up your unit to a set of 12 inch 500 watt speakers over a period of a year or so(constatly listening to it loud at it will go) one of two things will happen youll burn the unit up or you speakers will get damaged. Meaning if you decide to put a new HU and amp, the speakers will not sound as good as it should and will probably fall apart. well theres my two cents.LOL
as far as speaker damage goes the only way speaker damage will happen is if the person cuts the radio up to the point of disstoration. new speakers will provide a better overall sound and a small increase in volume. the only way to get more volume is more clean power. if it is not clean power you will run into disstoration and run a risk of blowing your speakers.
by the way the rms rating on that radio is around 5 to 7 watts. peak is around 15 to 20 watts. the 5 to 7 watts are clean. the 15 to 20 watts will be disstored and you will be at risk of blowing them.
