1991 F-250 4x4.
I was driving and they worked fine, then all of the sudden they didnt work and the brake light came on. The fluid did not leak out. The pedle is still firm and doesnt go to the floor. It felt like the back ones worked a little.
So I changed the master cylinder today and bleed all the air out of the system. Now the pedle is firm again and I thought I fixed it, untill I took it out for a drive, and its the same thing. The pedle is hard, there is no air in it. And the back brakes work, but nothing from the front.
Whats wrong?
Thanks,
Lars
Sounds like the proportioning valve failed. If you get a leaky line, or the spring breaks inside it you can get only front or rear brakes. I had one that froze up over a winter of non-use. I only had front brakes till I finally figured it out. Only took me a couple of months and several hundred in new parts.
Where is the proportioning valve? I thought thats what it was too, but couldent find one. I found some sort of valve in the brake line that goes to the rear brakes, it had 4 wires going into it, and a bleeder valve on it. But it isnt connected to the front brakes at all. Is this the Anti-lock brakes?

Yep, that's your RABS.
The proportioning valve is on the drivers side under the hood right next to the framerail. You can follow the coil of brakelines to it if you can't find it. It has a wireconnection on the top.
no the lines that come out of the master cylinder go straight to the proportioning valve. you can't miss it. it has all kinds of steel brake lines coming out of it
