sounds like a CAT?
While checking for a bad bearing on the passenger side..I checked
the drivers side as well which was tight!
But when I rotated the tire backwards it made the sound of a cat
in heat. when rotated forward no sound but when rotated in reverse the sound came back along with some male cats...
Mike "the mechanic said it was the the transmission?

If you are hearing the noise close to you it is likely the brake pads making the noise. The transmission is not engaged when you are just turning the front wheels. There is an outside chance it could be the clutch pack in the transfer case but it should make noise in both directions if any of the internal friction plates are dragging. Being immersed in transmission fluid, I can't see how they would make a high pitched noise unless your case is empty.

Agree with aerocolorado...can't be transmission since it's not engaged. Only suggestion I might offer though is to check the dust shield and see if it's bent too close to the rotor. Had this happen with mine when I replaced the rack and pinion steering and had trouble removing the outer tie rod end. When removing the tie rod end I had slightly bent the dust shield out towards the rotor and it rubbed against the rotor, but surprisingly in only one direction...go figure.
