Code reader for laptop?

I currently own a 96 Explorer. Will be buying an 04 Expedition early next year. I would like to buy a device to plug in to the OBDII port and show diagnostic codes on my laptop. What is the most cost effective tool for the home user who does not need all the technical bells and whistles... but just wants to be able to save $100 at the dealer if the gas cap caused the check engine light to come on or a simple sensor needs to be replaced.

Also, does the 04 Expedition have the OBDII also? I have read that the OBD III is coming out, but was not sure if that applies to the 04 Expedition or not...

Any info or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Jeff

For what you're asking, I concur, their product looks great. I went with the Superchip tuner for more versatility.

Anyone used the digimoto.com product? It used the scantool.net hardware and what looks like pretty good software... for about 1/3 the cost of autotap.com. Love to hear some feedback from someone who has used it.

I bought the scantool setup before digimoto started dealing their products. Software is free, and is very easy to use. I got everything needed for about $65. I can check and clear the MFC's, plus log real time data while driving to review later to see what all the sensors are doing.

obddiagnostics has a nice scan tool that you can purchase already built or buy a kit and build it yourself. The software is free, although it only gives you the code.
