I was trying to pick up a Chilton's manual for my '00 ranger and I noticed that they stopped at '99. So I looked next to them and picked up a Hayne's manual - they end at '00.
After picking through it I'm thinking that the Hayne's manual sucks and I wish that my parts store would hurry up and get some Chilton's in.
Are those two manuals written for different audiences?
Neither one of them is really great, but I tend to prefer the Haynes over Chilton. Had a bad experience with the Chilton and a Subaru engine cam belt. Bogus info-took me a day to figure out why it wouldn't run. If you can stand the price and plan to keep the vehicle, pop for the Ford manuals. You might even find one on ebay or somewhere on the net. Maybe even here!
The Haynes manual blows. My advice is get a copy of the actual Ford shop manuals. I think you can even get them on CD. They used to have them on this website, maybe they still do.
I have the service manuals on CD for my '94. It was cheap off Ebay (less than $20). If you can find it there, I highly recommend picking it up. Great exploded views of the major components and step-by-step instructions for removal, disassembly and re-assembly. They should be out for the '00 by now. Newer year's may not.
BTW, nice user name. Math, physics or engineering? I was the latter two and I hope I never have to see one of your namesakes again.
I prefer the CD, that way I can just print out what I need, rather than hunt around in the book for my particular issue - especially annoying when lying on your back under the truck and you have to rely on your girlfriend to read the instructions to you
BTW StockRanger: Eigenvector was my original Quake online name back when I was in engineering school (playing games when I should have been doing homework) - I really enjoyed Dynamic Control Systems and took the name from there - had it ever since. I've never used eigenvectors since joining the real world.
