I have had my rotors turned twice due to warping and it has returned again. I thought about it and since it affects the brake system I consider it a safety defect, and so does DOT-NHTSA (department of transportation-national highway transportation safety administration.) I called them at 1-800-327-4326 and discussed it with a rep and was sent a form to fill out and return. The funny thing was only one other ever sent in or complained about this defect. If everyone would do this something would be done by Ford. As of this point DOT only has two reports of a problem that plagues all SDs. Anyway, I called my dealer and told them I filled a complaint and really needed these to work (I pull show trailers) and they are going to make them right even if they have to put on aftermarket and my truck has 68K. Call DOT at the above number and file a complaint, if enough are filed Ford has to act.

brake rotor warp
Thanks for the tip. I keep a word document with all the posts that I want to save for posterity without having to search archives. This one is definately going in that document. Thanks.
I've heard a lot of guys have issues with the rotors on their F-250's, and I'm glad guys like you are takin' care of business. I'll be sure to do the same if my rotors act up.
> they are going to make them right even if they have to put on aftermarket and my truck has 68K.
If you do, take a look at the Group Purchase forum. There is currently an excelent deal to be had for Super Duty/Excursion onwers to upgrade to ART rotors and pads. They perform excellent!
Having turned my rotors 3 times before finally changing over, I guess I should call the number too. The stock rotors that were removed look horrible and aren't even fit for anything but the scrap heap.
I have had the problem too. 2000 F350 SD. Started at about 8,000, but didn't really get bad until after 12,000. When I reported it to the dealer, he said that brake rotors are only warrenteed til 12,000, even though I had the 36,000 mile "bumper to bumper warranty. I have about 38,000 on the truck now and the brakes are getting really bad. I am going to have to turn or replace the rotors. I have been looking at the group purchase, but I really think that Ford should take some action about this problem. I think that I will call the D.O.T. number too.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 21-Nov-02 AT 11:15 AM (EST)]This great, I'll too be calling the number. I was just online checking my post about my ESOF problem when I ran across the subject.
Had my rotors turned at 22,000, new pads and rotors at 37,000 now at 54,000 the steering wheel shakes like crazy coming to a stop from highway speeds. I thought I was the only one with the problem, I tow a lot also.
I am the original poster of this topic and here is the update. My dealer is replacing my rotors free of charge and it has nothing to do with warranty...it is a defect. We have bought vehicles from this dealer for 25 years and they are the best but everyone should benefit from this. You know when something is bad ITS BAD and Ford knows this rotor warp is BAD and the only way you will get results is as A GROUP. If the DOT hears enough about this Ford WILL make it good. Anything you feel is a problem let DOT know it may fall into a large group complaint. The only way to fight BIG BUSINESS is as a group. This is a great forum and with the knowledge that is here we can make a differance.
I just sent an email to Ford Customer Support Center regarding this problem and refered them to this thread for additional info. I received an automated acknowledgement of my email with a response promised within three business days. I will post their response.
The response should be interesting if not amusing. Most repsonses from the FoMoCo are meant to scare you off or direct your thinking process in another direction. They really hate it when the masses complain about one single thing and this one is it. I look forward to the response and would be willing to bet it is a copy of the one I received.

brake rotor warp
I'm glad they're looking here. We have an '03 Expedition with about 9,000 miles in the house. The rotors have developed some serious ridges/grooves in them, which don't appear good at all to me. HAS ANYONE SEEN SOMETHING LIKE THIS? WHY DOES IT HAPPEN? I took them to the dealer, and was told in standard dealer etiquette that it was normal. I was given no further explanations. Tell me, guys, have you ever seen circular grooves in your rotors develop that quickly? This is on my father's vehicle, and he literally drives like there's a raw egg under his foot that he doesn't want to break.
If his driving style produced those ridges, I would hate to see what happens with more aggressive driving. In any case, I don't see his rotors as being safe, and would like to know Ford's thoughts on the subject. I think I'll be contacting them or the NHTSA directly myself. Thanks to this thread and the one on the NHTSA here on FTE for pushing me in the right direction.

Hey I own 3 f250 and my personal work truck which now has 50000 miles on it has suddenly developed rotor problems. I have invested about $800 in the problem and it has come back twice since the first new set that I put on it. I am glad to know that this is a wide spread problem and not my driving habits, as my tech was trying to make me think. Thank for the information on the DOT #, I will be calling them and my dealer.
Well, after sending the email to Ford Customer Support, I really did not expect to hear from them anytime soon. Even after getting the automated email acknowledgement promising a response within three business days, I wasn't convinced that my email would get much of a response. I was suprised that when I got home a couple of hours after sending the email, I had a phone message from Ford saying that they received my email and wanted to talk to me about it. I called them and explained my complaint. They asked what I thought was wrong and I told them that I felt that the rotors were defective. They asked if I was asking for Ford to take care of the cost of fixing the problem and I told them "Yes". I explained to them that I had called the dealer at 12,000 miles and was told that the rotors would not be covered under the 36,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty and that the truck now had 38,000 miles on it. I also told them that I felt that it was not a warranty issue, but rather a defect issue and I felt that Ford should correct it. They asked if I had taken the truck in to have the dealer look at it, and I told them "no". They asked me to take the truck to the dealer and have the dealer decide what needed to be done to fix the problem and then they would talk to me again. They did not say whether or not they would pay for it, but they have my complaint and they did not say no. Now, I have to find time to get the truck to the dealer and have them take a look at it. I will post a follow-up when I know more.

If you are going to do it,I would suggest you do it ASAP.This,IMO,would help drive home the fact that you are serious concerning this matter and not just complaining as I'm sure many do.
