screeching noise on startup - please help

On my '94 F150 V8 302, I go to start up the engine and it makes a really bad screeching sound. Now this sound will stay on for as long a I let it sit there, but I took it down the driveway and then the noise stopped but my battery light came on, and it felt like I had no power at all. It was true, my battery was dying. So I put on a new alternator and new battery terminals thinking this would help.....no it didn't. The screeching noise is still there and I don't know what to do. Oh my belt is newer.... as of august.

Is it the pully's on my belt?

Any ideas?

First step would be to make sure the belt to the alternator is tight.

About 15 years ago, I had a similar problem with an old 302. A bolt near the alternator (can't remember if it was part of the alternator mounting or something else) had backed itself out to the point of making contact with the alternator pulley. This prevented the pulley from turning, which in turn caused the belt to slip and resulted in a loss of electrical power as the battery wore down.

Of course, if you just changed the alternator you'd have probably discovered this, but I thought I'd throw it out anyway.

Check the tensioner. Can't tell ya how many tired, aggravated folks came into Auto Zone after throwing their belt because of a bad tensioner.

My alternator makes a terrible howl when its very cold out. I think there is a TSB out on this, but I don't remember if there was a fix or it was "normal."

If it is not the bolt and the pulley and tensioner seem in good condition try a can of asphalt belt dressing. It will make an older belt with harder rubber more sticky. After I did this and squirted some lube on the pulley and shaft bearings on the alt, I haven't heard the noise. But it hasn't been below 28 degrees yet either...

Well folks I've now found the problem. Turns out I made the mistake myself. As it was -16 degrees out I was changing the selenoid in my truck in a parking lot. So I took the leads off the selenoid and didn't remember where they go, so I put the leads back on the new one as best as I could remember, and they were wrong.

So here we are I was burning out the starter and that was the noise. I will check the tensioner and such for another clanking noise. Sounds like around the fan that's making the noise. Thanks again guys.
