My '99, 3.0L,4X4 began squealing (screeching) intermittently from, I believe, the front end. This happens in 2WD and will stop when I put it in 4WD. It is not consistant, so it doen't do any good to take it to the dealer if it's not squealing. Has this happened to anyone else? And does anyone have a clue as to where to begin to look for the problem? Thanks !!
mine does the same thing. i found that if i put alot of stress on the altinator (turning blower on high, putting high beams on ect...) and i hit the gas i could make it screech. i'm thinking the belts are slipping or the altinator's going. this is only one of many things it could be. hope this helps - jesse
My '00 Ranger would only do that when the belt was cold or damp from morning dew or puddle splash. The tensioner is only like 30 bucks from Napa and if your belt is in need of changing you can kill two birds with one stone. Its the simplest place to check and changing the serpentine belt is so easy I'm kicking myself for having the dealer do it the first time (and I paid them 80 bucks for the priviledge of having them do an incomplete job too!!!!)
Next time it does it, put the tranny in neutral and coast to see if it stops. If it keeps squeaking, its in the chassis somewhere. Brake calipers, front u joints etc. If it quits it probably is the belt. Do you have the auto lock hubs. When in 2wd are the hubs engaged? We need a little more info please.
It's the hubs. I can't believe nobody picked up on this yet...it does it when he/she switches in and out of 4-wheel-drive. This is an extremely common problem on those trucks. The PVH hubs need to be serviced...that's a great place to start.
I'm sure this is totally different, ........ but my 1999 Supercab 3.0 2 wheel drive... the right front makes a strange sound, when i turn the wheel, or hit bumps. It's not anything at all w/ the power sterring.... Last year i had a new Rack&Pinion and powersteering pump put on it, so i know its not any of that
does any one know whats goin on? Could it be related to the million pounds of mud that have been splashed up on it, and washed off repeatedly
Thanks for all the responses!! The squealing continues when in nuetral and coasting. The noise is definately related to the drive line and not in the engine. Does the hub servicing require special tools that only a dealer would have?
When I discover the problem (and solution), I will post it.
Removing the hubs does require special tools. The dealer has them. But if you want to do it yourself I think some big autoparts stores carry the tools as well. Not sure on the prices. Some people here claim to have removed the hubs with simple tools, but I'd say they probably damaged the hubs in the process. If you have a good shop manual for your truck, it'll sure come in handy. Good luck.
I just had my 1996 Mazda B4000 in the shop and had the UV joints replaced .. was having noise in front end thinking it was hubs too but was not .. check your UV joints .. it was real bad when I turned at slow speeds either direction .. had to replace both sides ..
