You might want to start at 8 BTDC and work your way up to 12 or 14 BTDC. When you start to hear it "ping"...then back it down to the previous set timing #.
Remember #1 needs to be at TDC on the compression stroke. Also make sure your distrib is pointing to #1 on the cap and is fully seated into the manifold/block.
If the cap, rotor, plugs, and wires are old...replace them. That certainly will play a role in timing performance.
