I have a 83 F350 it makes a clunking noise it won,t go clunk, clunk, clunk but it goes clunk drive a ways clunk drive a ways clunk etc.. . I,m getting ahead of myself. It was making this clunking noise then my fwd quit working. I replaced the front hubs fwd works but still have the clunking noise. I thought maybe it was the ujoint in the axel. But a friend of my sons dad says there is a chain inside of the transfer case that is stretched and proly slipping. Said it was very expensive to fix. Just use the truck to haul wood and plow snow. Any suggestions would be highly appreciated.
P.S Not much of a mechcanic but like to try to fix things myself.

There are too many possibilities, trucker41. The first thing to do is find out where the “clunk” is coming from. Did your son’s friend’s dad say that he heard/felt the noise coming from the transfer case?

Most likely a Borg-Warner 1345, but there have been a few of the ‘83’s found still using the NP208
