I just bought a 1972 Ford Sport Custom truck. I am planning to restore it and need to know how to decipher the codes on the door tag. What engine did it come with, what does the color code mean - that stuff.
Is there a website or any refernce available for this ?
i thought a 2v 360 was a little mightier than that?
The 360 was a detuned engine trying to deal with early emissions.
You now have 4 cylinder engines making many more horse power than the ol 360. Hook something to the rear and it will puke on the floor, while the ol 360 will drag them to the next gas pump.

That's the certifiednet HP figure...aka RWHP....not the (usual inflated HP) figure from the flywheel....This is what Ford began listing in the late 1960's.
Here's some of the (usual inflated) HP & (actual) RWHP figures from Edmunds.com on the dyno tests they performed on 2007 trucks.
wow, dodge is the worst boaster of them all about "big bad hemi power" in the advertisements and theirs turned out to be the greatest difference between what they claim and what the real deal is. i am just amazed my 40 year old american gas guzzling v8 is only pumping out 175 ponies at the rear axle. i figured it would be more like 220

The Dodge Ram "semi" Hemi crowd soon discovered that their trucks came in second when matched against the Titan, which was the fastest truck on the planet when introduced in 2004 (excepting Ford Lightnings...in some cases). Wait'll they come up against the Tundra! The Chevy for all that HP, is actually the most anemic of the bunch. Besides the OHV (the roots of it date to 1955 and GM tries to disguise that OHV fact by calling 'em "Cam in Blocks!"), it's saddled with the ancient 4 speed dual range hydro..another greybeard with roots first used in 1940, upgraded in 1951, 1964, and again a few years ago.
Hill climbing: Titan/Tundra in the lead, followed by the Dodge, Ford and the gasping Chevy's. On hills, the Chevy's get up and go...got up and went!
